A mirror that does not obstruct the viewer's access to their reflection - the form of the object is used as a means to visually expand its size, offering the user an unobstructed view, the mirror is divided by a horizontal line at eye level. This line imitates the horizon - an element seen in nature only in open, expansive spaces: fields, the sea, the sky.
My goal was to portray the same spatial effect found in my drawings, but in an object. The curvature needed to align with peripheral vision can only be accurately calculated if the object is viewed from one side, something I hadn't even considered while drawing. Here, the goal of the object dictated its function. I chose to design a mirror, since it most closely resembled the nature of a drawing. As a test I made a smaller mirror which I wanted to use in my apartment, the object served as a way to test out material finishes and the curvature effect.
To further the goal of simulating space. The curvature of the edges is precisely calculated according to a perspective formula which follows the natural human vision, essentially canceling out the perspective curves we see in our periphery.
I was outside thinking about what actually makes a view feel vast and expansive. I realized it wasn't only my eyes bending space - the horizon was a major piece of the puzzle. I believe it is synonymous with space itself, since we only see it when there are no obstacles in the way. Simulating the horizon, then, would fulfil the object's goal more effectively.
The mirror features a whitened birch plywood backing with the mirror glass bonded to its surface, supported by two stainless steel rods that the mirror leans against. It can either be hung on a wall or used with the stand, and the shape can be tailored to specific measurements to suit any height.
To achieve this, I experimented with different mirrors and found that two mirrors of different tone could replicate the tonal shift and contrast of the horizon. I incorporated this into the final object.
