U01

2020
U01, full ink drawing, first in the untitled series, by Manfredas

A venture into three dimensional space, experimental patterns adapted to express purpose and age. A blueprint for the untitled series to build upon.

The first drawing of the untitled series. The original idea of this series is to do better than I did before, in the case for this drawing, the transfer of patterns from 2D to 3D seemed like the next step for me, bigger format, more ways do express myself, fail and in the end, become a better artist.

Detail of abandoned architecture and liminal-space motifs referenced in U01

Drawn using unipin liners and noodlers bulletproof ink, ensuring the longevity of the piece. 52×80cm

I looked at abandoned architecture, concrete building remains for the composition of the drawing, this eventually birthed the idea of creating a dead world, one in which nothing happens, nothing changes, no life to evolve as time passed, no perception of time its just there to be observed for when you need it.

I enjoyed being outside at night, and felt closed in at home - this fed into the conceptual genesis of this series. The stars and the monochrome colour palette reflect this. Suddenly my goal became to create a world that felt "open" and this became my driving factor without me realising it at the time. Since I wasn't really looking into what other visual artists were doing, some elements of the music I was listening to seeped into my work instead. I wanted to portray a lyric without writing - the same way people analyse the lyrics of a song, I wanted the same to apply to my art. I integrated the names of albums and artists I enjoy, because I wanted to show something more than just a pretty picture.
