L05 shelf, front view, whitened plywood and reeded glass, by Manfredas
Concept sketch for the L05 shelf, curvilinear perspective study

A shelf for the living room - a statement piece that defines space and direction. A translation of flat drawn patterns and three dimensional space, it is intended to be walked around rather than being looked at. The shelves are composed to guide the viewer through this experience.

This projects goal is to translate of my drawings to object form, the composition, layering and patterns all had to be placed within the object, I started with identifying different ways to display my identity as an artist.

Diagram of the parallax and reeded-glass effect used in the L05 shelf

Positioned just below eye level, so the viewer can immerse themselves in the depth illusions created by the object. The reeded glass acts as a filter, breaking up the objects behind it into vertical strips, imitating a dense forest. Added household objects and stainless steel rods both contribute to the effect, acting as additional layers of depth that shift as the viewer moves around the object. The skeleton of the object is shaped by the rules used in drawing, continuing the theme of the series.

For the spacial effect I used the parralax effect, its when the object further away seem to move slower than those closer when you shift your position, so you can place elements at different depths within the object and by walking around the object you can experience this effect, problem is that this deasnt really expand the space in any way. To solve this i used reeded glass as a filter, which not only multiplies the elements behind it, but also distorts the space behind it adding on to the effect

Pattern study drawing that informed the L05 shelf structure

The shelf is made from whitened B-grade plywood, tempered reeded glass and stainless steel. The structure stands 160 cm tall, 100 cm wide and 46 cm deep.

The structure emerged after extensive sketching. The object follows different patterns I used in my drawings, applied across different directions - every piece ended up following the language of its pattern.
